A Separation by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi has been shortlisted for an Academy Award in the category of Best Foreign Language Film.

The nominations were announced on Wednesday, with Farhadi’s film going up against Canada’s Monsieur Lazhar, Poland’s In Darkness, Belgium’s Bullhead, Denmark’s SuperClasico, Germany’s Pina, Morocco’s Omar Killed Me, Israel’s Footnote and Taiwan’s Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale.

Farhadi has already collected the Golden Globe for the best foreign language film; however, his competitors for that prize have not been shortlisted for the Oscar.

On Friday and Saturday, two committees in Los Angeles and New York will watch the nine films and vote for the final five nominees that will compete for the Oscar.

This year’s Oscar ceremony will be held on February 26 in Los Angeles.
