Saudi Arabia condemns Ahmadinejad trip to Gulf island

Saudi Arabia has condemned Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s trip to Abu Musa, referring to it as “a blatant violation of the UAE right to sovereignty.”

Arab News reports that the Saudi cabinet convened on Monday with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s recent trip to Abu Musa on its agenda.

Reports indicate that Saudi Arabia has described Ahmadinejad’s trip as “discrediting all efforts to find a peaceful solution to our disputes.”

Ahmadinejad visited Abu Musa during a tour of Hormozegan Province in southern Iran. Abu Musa, an island in the Persian Gulf, has been a point of dispute for UAE, which claims the island as part of its territories.

Iran claims that Abu Musa, together with the Larger and Lesser Tunbs, two smaller uninhabited islands, are part and parcel of Iran.

Iran maintains that the president’s trip to Abu Musa is an internal matter and has dismissed the concern expressed by Arab countries.

UAE has called on Iran to return to the negotiating table to determine the fate of the three Islands.
