Demonstrators gathered at El Gölü park in the northwestern Iranian city of Tabriz on Monday to protest against the drying of Lake Oroumiyeh.
The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reports that a group of Tabriz citizens gathered at the city park on the occasion of World Environment Day and then began a demonstration, with hundreds of protesters chanting slogans that called attention to the drying of Lake Oroumiyeh.
The demonstrators also held up pictures of several people who were arrested by the authorities at previous demonstrations for the cause held on May 21.
The gathering ended at 9:10 PM without any intervention by police.
On May 21, police confronted gatherings in Oroumiyeh and Tabriz held to protest government inaction regarding the drying of the largest lake inside Iran.
Lake Oroumiyeh is reportedly shrinking at an alarming rate, and analysts claim it may completely disappear within three to five years if that rate is maintained. The construction of numerous dams on the rivers that feed the lake has been cited as a main cause of the drying.
