UN rights chief Navi Pillay on Monday demanded an immediate cessation of all bombardments of populated areas by the Syrian regime, warning that such violence amounted to crimes against humanity.
“The government of Syria should immediately cease the use of heavy armaments and shelling of populated areas, as such actions amount to crimes against humanity and possible war crimes,” Pillay told a meeting of the Human Rights Council.
Pillay also said that those responsible for attacks on UN observers in Syria must be judged, a week after a UN convoy came under fire while trying to reach the town of Al-Haffe.
“We must make our utmost possible efforts to ensure accountability for all perpetrators, including those who have attacked UN observers in Syria,” she said.
