A Letter To Ahmad Shaheed ; Concerns About Prisoners’ Health

Ardeshir Amirarjmand, spoksperson of The Coordinating Council for the Green Path of Hope of Iran, has sent a letter to Ahmad Shaheed, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights Situation of the Islamic Republic of Iran to draw his attention to the plight of a number of political prisoners whose health or physical integrity is in serious jeopardy.

The letter :

21 July 2012

In the name of God

Dear Dr. Shaheed,

Pursuant to the earlier communications, while the ruling authoritarian apparatus continue their gross and systematic violation of the basic and fundamental rights of the Iranian people, I am writing to draw your attention to the plight of a number of political prisoners whose health or physical integrity is in serious jeopardy.

Mr. Behzad Nabavi, 70, and one of the oldest political prisoners in Iran, who has been suffering from general ill health, especially acute lower back pain, and in need of sustained, special care and treatment, has been kept in prison and deprived of proper and timely medical care. Mr. Mostafa Tajzadeh and Mr. Abolfazl Ghadyani, who have persisted in their defence of the constitutional rights and demands of the people have been subjected to harsher treatment by prison wardens, and deprived of effective medical care. Both suffer serious physical conditions.

Mr. Mohammad Seddigh Kaboodvand who has been on hunger strike since 26 May 2012 protesting his unjust imprisonment is in critical physical conditions.

Mrs. Narges Mohammadi, the well-known human rights activist, who has been suffering from acute muscle paralysis, should be under the care of her personal physician. Despite such critical physical conditions, she has been deprived of routine visits and even telephone contact for over 11 days already. This has raised serious concerns about the state of her health.

A number of other political prisoners, including Mr. Mehdi Mahmoudian, Fariborz Raies-Dana, Mohammad Seifzadeh, Hamed Rouhinejad, Anvar Hossein-Panahi, Heshmatollah Tabarzadi, and Mrs. Kobra Banna-zadeh Amirkhizi, and Mrs. Zeinab Jalalian all need urgent, effective medical care.

The current treatment of political prisoners by the Iranian prison/judicial authorities is, needless to say, in blatant and systematic violation of all recognized international rules and norms and Irans international commitments and obligations, including the minimum standards for the treatment of detainees, as well in contravention of the applicable national law and constitutional guarantees.

In light of the foregoing, it is our earnest hope that you would take all necessary measures, in pursuit of your mandate, towards effective compliance of the Iranian authorities with their obligations and observance of the basic rights of all political prisoners, especially those in need of urgent medical care.

I remain, Sincerely Yours

Ardeshir Amir-Arjmand
