The Iranian translator of German literature Jahed Jahanshahi has died of a cardiac failure at the age of 66.

He died while he was walking along with his wife at the foot of Tehran’s northern mountains on Thursday, Persian news agencies reported.

He was the translator of “Peeling the Onion (“Beim Hauten der Zwiebel”), an autobiographical work by German Nobel Prize-winning author and playwright Günter Grass.

Among his translations also are “The Bread of Those Early Years” (“Das Brot der fruhen Jahre”), a 1955 novel by German writer Heinrich Boll, “The President and Eve of Retirement” (“Der Prasident”) by Austrian playwright Thomas Bernhard, and “The Mother” (“Die Mutter”) by the German modernist playwright Bertolt Brecht.

He had also translated works by Portuguese poet and writer Fernando Pessoa and Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

“He was one of the few prolific and expert translators of German literature in Iran,” Ali Abdollahi, a Persian translator of German literature, told the Persian service of MNA.

Many German plays performed in Iran were based on his translations of the works, he added.
