Hundreds of workers on strike

300 workers at the Fajr Petrochemical factory in Mahshahr have gone on strike in protest against the lack of job security.

Abbas Rezai, a labour activist, told ILNA on Monday December 24: “300 contract workers of Rampco working at the Fajr Petrochemical Factory have gone on strike to protest their precarious situation and management’s refusal to provide the benefits that had been promised earlier.”

Rezai said there is very little hope of resolving the disputes in view of the fact that the workers previously have gone on similar strikes without any results.

ILNA also reported that the Tabas head of Worker’s House says he is anticipating the layoff of 120 miners following the government’s failure to pay for the coal it has purchased. The report adds that the continuation of the situation could lead to 700 miners losing their jobs.

Factory closures and job losses have become the order of the day in Iran every day since the Mahmoud Ahmadinejad administration restructured subsidies, and that has been compounded by international sanctions that have heavily strained the economy in recent months.
