Human rights activist Kouhyar Goudarzi and his mother have been arrested

Human rights activist and banned university student Kouhyar Goudarzi and his mother Parvin Mokhtare were arrested, according to several sources.

The mother and son were arrested about a week ago, according to the Committee of Human Rights Reporters. Parvneh Mokhtari is reportedly being held in a detention centre in Kerman. There is no information on the details of her arrest. Kouhyar Goudarzi was reportedly arrested by the Ministry of Intelligence on July 31st, but the location of his arrest or detention are unknown at this time.
It is believed that the reason for Kouhyar Goudarzi’s arrest is his human rights activities. There are currently no confirmed details available on their official charges.
In the past few days, Kouhyar Goudarzi’s close friends have made unsuccessful attempts to obtain information on his whereabouts. Additionally, according to CHRR, some of Kouhyar Goudarzi’s friends were summoned by the Ministry of Intelligence in recent days for interrogation.
Kouhyar Goudarzi, a member of CHRR, was arrested in December 2009 along with other human rights activists as they were on their way to Qom (southwest of Tehran) to attend Ayatollah Montazeri’s funeral.
In June 2010, Judge PirAbassi from branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court sentenced Kouhyar Goudarzi to one year in prison. He was charged with, “Propaganda against the regime through effective cooperation with the Committee of Human Rights Reporters website”, “Gathering and publishing anti-regime news and disseminating the information to terrorist organizations abroad”, “Giving interviews to foreign media”, “Publishing articles on various websites”.
He was held in the notorious Evin prison for approximately ten months before he was transferred to the brutal Rajai Shahr ‘Gohardasht’ prison (Karaj) in October 2010. He was held there until his release on December 14, 2010. While held in Evin prison, Kouhyar Goudarzi received the 2010 John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award presented by the National Press Club.
According to sources, Parvin Mokhtare has no history of political activities. The only time she had been vocal was during her son’s arrest and imprisonment, when she had openly spoken out about the illegal actions by Iranian authorities.
According to Jaras, Parvin Mokhtare was arrested and detained for a few hours once in 2009 when she and other family members of political prisoners went to the Tehran Prosecutor’s office. She was eventually released after the other family members had protested.
Kouhyar Goudarzi is the second member of CHRR to be arrested in recent days. Human rights and children’s rights activist Saeed Jalalifar was arrested on July 31st and transferred to Evin prison, according to reports.
