Golestan Palace, one of the oldest buildings in the Iranian capital, has been declared a world heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

At the 37th gathering of UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre in Cambodia on Sunday June 23, Golestan Palace was added to the list of world heritage sites.

The application to register the building on the UNESCO list was made by Iran’s World Heritage Organization in 2007.

Golestan Palace, located in Iran’s old quarter, was built in the 16th century by the Safavids, who used it as a vacation residence. In the 19th century, it became the main residence of the Qajar Dynasty, who moved the capital to Tehran. During the Pahlavi reign, the palace was used to hold formal receptions.

Since the Revolution of 1979, the Golestan Palace and its Gardens have been open to the public as a museum.
