Nuclear talks between Iran and the UN nuclear watchdog may resume in August, diplomats said on Monday July 8.

The potential meeting would be the first round of IAEA talks with Iran since the election of moderate candidate Hassan Rohani.

Despite early statements of optimism from Western leaders about Rohani’s victory, the U.S. has moved to intensify sanctions on Iran since the election.

The International Atomic Energy Agency is set to issue its next quarterly report on Iran’s nuclear program in late August.

Rohani has promised a more conciliatory approach in contrast to that of his predecessor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Iran has repeatedly insisted that its nuclear program is peaceful, and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has announced that the use of atomic weapons is against Sharia.
