Reactions to the violation of human rights in Iran
1. The past week saw a number of residents of Zarin-Shahr in Esfahan gathering in the streets chanting in protest of government legislation regarding merging parts of villages of Lanjan and Zarrin-shahr to Folad-shahr. Violent action was taken against the protestors and some were arrested.
2. A number of prisoners have published a letter addressed to the Head of the Judiciary to call an end to the execution of SaharMahabadi and SogandJahani. The financial limitations of the 27 and the 23-year-old youths resulted in a lack of sufficient defence from their public defence lawyer.
3. 11 days have passed since Mohammad-Amin Agooshi, a 53 year old Kurdish teacher, started his hunger strike. He is a political prisoner who is currently at the central prison of Zahedan. His daughter stated the following: “my father has gone on a hunger strike because the judicial authorities have not agreed to his conditional release”.
4. The Human Rights Organisation expressed concerns about both the Iranian opposition leaders who are under house arrest and the medical care of political prisoners in Iran. This concern stems from the death of AfshinAsanloo, a labour activist who was in prison, and Mir-HosseinMousavi, who is in a poor physical condition.
Women’s right
1. On 7th July, Mrs BesmAljaboori attempted to commit suicide after the Abbasi intelligence department interface visited the female section of’ Evin prison where they interrogated and psychologically tortured her. She had been sentenced to 5 years imprisonment with charges of spying for Iraq. Fortunately, her fellow prisoners saved her from her attempted suicide.
Universities and University students
1. On Wednesday, 26th June, Samira Raazeghi, both a doctor and a student specialising in radiotherapy and chemotherapy in Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, was arrested. It has been 10 days that she has been held in the intelligence detention centre in Fars province, also known as Number 100. Her arrest took place while she was studying final month of her course.
2. Kamran Daneshjou, the minister of science, has announced the implementation of gender segregation in 25 public and private universities. He states “The document of putting Islamic rulings on universities is being finalised by Dr Hadad Adel in the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution.”
3. On Sunday, 7th July, Misagh Yazdan Nejhad, a student who is in RajaeeShahr prison in Karaj, refused to go to the hospital due to offensive behaviour from the officials and their use of handcuffs and shackles.
Workers and vulnerable communities
1. On Sunday, 7th July, the intelligence agents of Esfahan transferred Mr BehnamKhodadadi, a labour activist and an employee of a refinery firm in Esfahan, from his workplace to the intelligence detention centre in Esfahan.
2 .Khaled Hosseini a labour activist and a member of a Coordinating Committee in establishing Workers’ Organisation, was sentenced to one year imprisonment. This sentence was issued by the first branch of the Revolutionary Court in Sanandaj with charges of “propaganda against the regime”.
3. On the morning of 10th July, a group of pensioners from a bus company gathered in front of the city council of Tehran in protest over the omission of 10 years of their work and insurance contributions.
4. Behnam Ebrahimzadeh (labour and children’s rights activist) had an interview with ShirinFamilieon Radio Farda one day before his recent arrest on Monday 1st July 2013 where he reasserted his innocence. He once more blamed the illness of his own son on his detention in custody.
5. More than 200 workers who were fired from Zagros steel melting factory gathered in front of the Department of Labor in protest against their expulsion in the city of Qorveh.
6. There are reports that three labour activists in Sanandaj (VafaQaderi, BehzadFarajollahi, KhaledHousaini) have each been sentenced to a year imprisonment, by the revolutionary court of Sanandaj, charged with producing propaganda against the regime.
7. Iranian workers from deprived areas used to migrate to bigger cities to find work, but in recent years they have been moving to Kurdistan in Iraq.
Sentences: death, flogging, amputation, imprisonment and detention
1. According to reports, on Friday 5 July, a ceremony entitled “Water Games” was held in Iran’s Zaminparkin Azimieh Karaj.The security guards captured 50 of the attendees. After being transferring to the police station, families of the detainees gathered in front of the police station and chanted their demands for the release of their loved ones.
2. On early Saturday morning 6 July, three individuals accused of drug trafficking were hanged in Ardabil.
3. On Saturday 6 July, eleven individuals accused of drug trafficking were executed in Zahedan’s main prison, 5 of them were women.
4. Esmail Sadeghi Niaraki, a public revolutionary prosecutor in Qazvin, said that on Sunday 7 July in the prison of Choobinder in Qazvin, three individuals accused of drug trafficking and two accused of murder were executed at dawn.
5. On Monday 8 July, according to the public relations attorney general of Ardabil province, three individuals charged with drug trafficking was executed in the main prison of Ardabil.
6. The deputy of the public prosecutor claimed that on the 8th July, two people charged with murder and another convicted of drug trafficking were hanged in Dizel Abad Prison of Kermanshah city.
7. The embassy of Afghanistan in Tehran has issued a news letter in relation to drug trafficking crimes, informing about the execution of 12 Afghan citizens.
8. A group of filmmakers who were working on a documentary film which was commissioned by the foreign media were arrested by the intelligence forces. This documentary report was commissioned by the foreign media of Mahmoud Reza K, a documentary filmmaker living in Sweden.
9. 6 individuals in the city of Bam were hanged on charges of drug dealing. Hojjatoleslam Ali Tavakoli, Chief Justice of the Kerman province has announced that it was decided by the Islamic Revolution Court of Bam city.
10. On Saturday 6th July 2013, seven people on charge of raping a woman were hanged. The number of execution in Iran has been greatly accelerated as there have been more than 40 people hanged in Iran in the first two weeks of June 2013.
11. Five people were arrested by the border guards for illegal entrance to the country from the border city of Piranshahr. The identifications of the arrested people have not yet been disclosed.
The rights of the followers of diversity of ethnicity and beliefs in Iran
1. On Wednesday 10th July 2013, the court case for Mostafa Bordbar, one of the arrested Christian converts among with another Christian who is currently in the 350 section of the Evin Prison started in Tehran.
2. On Sunday 7th July 2013, the 10th meeting of investigation into charges of Mohammed Abdullahi, a Kurdish political prisoner was held in the Branch 1 of the Mahabad’s Revolutionary Court.
3. Noora Samitra Fallah, a Baha’i citizen of Shiraz was arrested after being summoned to the ministry court by phone; there are no exact information on the reason for his arrest and whereabouts.
4. Moreover, Mr Mostafa Daneshjoo, one of the lawyers of Gonabadi Dervishes who is suffering from critical severe respiratory disease and cardiac arrhythmias was transferred to Shohada Hospital on an emergency basis.
5. Mohammad Ali Taheri, founder of ErfanKeihani, has not been given permission to have tooth and gum surgeries as was recommended by his doctor.
6. On Saturday morning 6th July, SamimZarei, a Baha’i resident in the city of Sanandaj, was arrested in her own house after an attack by security forces.
7. The passport of Mr. Mohammad TaghiFazelMeybodi, a spiritual reformist who is a researcher of Qum Seminary and a member of the Association of Researchers and teachers of Qom seminary, was confiscated at Tehran’s international airport and was banned from travel.
8. Aida Bandi a Baha’i citizen and student in her second term studying English Literature at Payam-e- Noor University in the city of Shiraz was prohibited from continuing her studies because of her beliefs. University authorities announced that she has to either change her religion to Islam or go abroad like other Baha’is.
9. GhaderZarei, a Kurdish citizen was arrested at one of his relative’s homes in the city of Urumia. One of his relatives said, “Ghader was a member of the Kurd party and has been arrested after he returned from Iraq. Security police officers arrested him at his father-in-law’s home, and transferred him to an intelligence office in one of Uroomia’s city prison”. His relative also said “we fear that he may be tortured during his interrogations”.
10. Two Yaresan family members (from Ahle’ Hagh) who committed suicide by setting themselves on fire about 40 days ago were threatened and banned from holding a memorial ceremony in any of the city’s halls.
11. NasimAshrafi, a Baha’i resident of Tehran from branch 28 of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court, presided by Judge Moghiseh, was charged with producing propaganda against the regime and sentenced to three years in prison.
12. On Saturday 6th July, at Enghelab Court in the city of Shiraz, 4 dervishes detained from Kavar-Rooz city, were charged with: “organising a terrorist group against the regime”, “attending protests intended to overthrow the government”, “waging war against God” and ” shipping illegal weapons “.
Media and cyberspace
1. There are reports that the police chief of Feta (the production and exchange of information) in a court in Semenan province arrested two people accused of posting insulting comments on Facebook and being rude to the regime.
2. On Thursday, 11th July, Faryba Pejhoh, a scholar and reformist journalists, was arrested at her home and taken to Even prison. No reason has yet been given for the arrest.
3. Colonel Nurollahi, police chief for the west of Tehran said that a boy by the name of “Behnam” has been arrested in Tehran for selling VPN.
4. Abbas Jafari Dolat Abadi, a Tehran prosecutor, said that the publication of private photos on the internet is “against the law”.
Other human rights violations
1. Alireza Farahani, a political prisoner in Rajai Shahr prison in city of Karaj, who suffered a hand injury while exercising 2 weeks ago, has been denied medical treatment.
2. The CEO of a petrochemical company has stated that, “petrochemical compounds such as benzene, toluene and xylene are cancerous so it does not make sense for the Oil Ministry to officially announce that these compounds will be used as fuel additives”.
3. The historical saqakhaneh of the Qajar period which was placed in the entrance corridor of the tomb of AllamaMajlisi in the city of Isfahan was destroyed last week by the management.
4. AsgharFarhadi (a famous film director) returned to Iran last night without any news coverage. His passport was first confiscated but later returned. He must now report to the airport authorities in order to be interrogated.
5. According to reports on the health status on the County of Elam, the Kurdish citizens are faced with sever health problems.
6. On Saturday 6th of July, MehdyMotamediMehr has been transferred from the security section of even prison to Rajai-Shahr prison in the city of Karaj.
7. Iranian police have published a statement regarding their plans for Ramadan on dealing with those who eat or drink in public.
8. The illness of HoutanDolati, a political prisoner in section 350 of Evin prison has deteriorated as nobody cares about the state of his health.
9. Gholamali rezayi, the chief justice of the province of Ardabil said: “in addition to execution of 18 cases of death penalties in the past two years, we are waiting for the final approval of 22 other death sentence.
