Iranian media report that two people have been arrested in connection with the shoe-throwing incident at the welcoming party for Iranian President Hassan Rohani.

The Mehr News Agency reports that a spokesman for Iran’s Security Forces announced that on Sunday September 29, two people were arrested for “the disruption of the welcoming party for the president.”

Yesterday’s ceremony was attended by a group of about 100 people opposed to developing closer relations with the U.S. The group, which consisted of Basij students, confronted the president’s convoy with shouts of “Death to America!”

Reports indicate that one of the protesters then threw a shoe at the president’s car.

The Islamic Republic establishment has been generally supportive of the president’s attempts to open channels of constructive communication with world powers during his visit to the UN.
