The U.S. State Department announced on Wednesday that relief on sanctions will be proportionate to Iran’s actions regarding its nuclear program.

Reuters reports that State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said the Obama administration has not yet urged Congress to refrain from imposing additional sanctions on Iran.

Representatives of the world powers held talks with Iranian delegates in Geneva on Tuesday and Wednesday, and reports indicate that Iran has shown its readiness to meet demands in order to ease international concerns about its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of international sanctions.

Psaki said in a briefing in Washington: “There remain differences over what sanctions relief might be appropriate. Anything we would do would be proportionate” to Iran’s steps in curbing its nuclear program.

He added, however, that talks with Iran had never been so detailed and he explained that the Iranian delegates had discussed what first steps they would be prepared to take as well as what the final step should be.

Talks will continue in November and, prior to that, technical experts from both sides will meet for further discussions.
