Eight hundred workers at Iran’s Tabriz Petrochemical Plant have signed a petition addressed to President Hassan Rouhani, demanding that he fulfil his campaign promise to raise salaries to compensate for the soaring rate of inflation.
According to the ILNA news agency, the petition asked Rouhani to ‘prioritize the workers’ salaries’ issue, and ensure that he instructs the Ministry of Works and Pensions to implement the promises that secured him the presidency’.
Earlier 420 oil and gas workers from the South Pars Fields sent a similar petition to the country’s Supreme Council of Labor, asking them to ‘set a minimum wage for the working classes over the next Persian year. This should be calculated by informed economists and sociologists, rather than neo-liberalists concerned only with supporting norms set by the International Monetary Fund.’
