Former student activist Maryam Shafipour was sentenced to 4 years in prison by a court of appeals. Shafipour was detained on July 27, 2013 after she appeared at Branch 2 of Shahid Moghaddas Court per order of a summons, and was transferred behind bars at Evin prison. She was held in Ward 209 for 2 months while undergoing harsh interrogations.
Eight months after her arrest, Judge Salavati presiding over Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court handed Shafipour a 7-year prison sentence. Reports indicated that before her harsh sentencing, her interrogators had put the student activist under intense pressure in a failed attempt to obtain false confessions. She was threatened and told by her interrogators that if she refused to confess, she would be handed a prison sentence exceeding 5 years.
Maryam Shafipour is a former agricultural engineering student from Qazvin International University who was suspended after 2 semesters and was expelled from university on her eighth semester due to her student activities and her weblog. Shafipour was first detained in 2010 and was handed a one-year suspended prison term lasting 5 years by the Qazvin Revolutionary Court.
In 2009 Maryam Shafipour served in the presidential election campaign of Mehdi Karroubi [held under house arrest since February 2011].
