A European Union court has annulled sanctions on a top Iranian university, which the 28-nation bloc accuses of being involved with Iran’s nuclear program.

The General Court ruled on July 3 that the European Union had provided insufficient evidence to justify an asset freeze on Tehran’s Sharif University of Technology.

The Luxembourg-based court said the freeze will continue for another two months to leave EU governments the possibility of providing better proof.

The EU sanctioned the university in 2012, claiming it was “providing support to Iran’s proliferation-sensitive nuclear activities.”

The West fears Iran is using its nuclear program as a cover to produce nuclear weapons, a claim Tehran rejects.

The General Court also scrapped EU sanctions imposed against former Syrian Economy Minister Mohamad Alchaar for his alleged association “with the Syrian regime and its violent repression.”
