Journalists call for release of jailed colleague

Eighty-two Iranian journalists have spoken out against the continued detention of Serajeddin Mirdamadi, an Iranian journalist who has been in custody since May 10.

Kaleme reports that a statement from the journalists denounces Mirdamadi’s continued arrest and the judiciary’s refusal to release him.

They write that his continued detention is a “violation of the promises” made by President Hassan Rohani, who during his campaign had welcomed the return of Iranians from abroad.

In June of 2013, Serajeddin Mirdamadi returned to Iran from Paris with his wife. The authorities confiscated his passport as he entered the Imam Khomeini Airport.

Last November, Mirdamadi was indicted for “acting against national security” as well “assembly and collusion.”

Mirdamadi was summoned for interrogation on May 10, 2014 and has been held in prison ever since. His lawyer has reported that Mirdamadi’s first court session will be in early August.
