Iran’s Prosecutor General and spokesperson for the judiciary announced that the Iranian courts have issued sentences in absentia for seven protesters from the 2009 election.

Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei told reporters that the sentences, ranging from three to 11 years in prison, have been issues in widely circulated newspapers.

Mohseni Ejei did not specify the names but said that since the sentences have been confirmed, the names will be soon announced.

He added that some other files are still being processed and more sentences may be issued.

Iranian authorities refer to the election protests of 2009 as “sedition” and have sentenced many election protesters to long terms in prison.

Many people fled the country after the 2009 election protests as a result of the crackdown on activists and journalists.
