Jailed Iranian labour activist Reza Shahabi has ended his 50-day hunger strike after the Tehran Prosecutor agreed to his demands.

Reports indicate that one of prosecutor’s deputies, Mehdi Khodabakhshi, visited Shahabi in hospital on Sunday July 20 and accepted his demands for ending his strike.

Shahabi has demanded that he be offered bail and transferred to hospital for spinal surgery. Shahabi has said he would end his hunger strike for now, but if the prosecutor’s promises are not fulfilled, he will once again refuse food.

Reza Shahabi, an executive member of the Tehran Bus Drivers Union, was arrested in June 2010 for acting against national security and sentenced to six years in jail.

He has gone on hunger strikes on several occasions to protest his mistreatment by the judiciary and the prison system.
