A earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale hit the Mormori region between the provinces of Ilam, Lorestan and Khuzestan on Monday August 18, damaging numerous homes and injuring scores of people.
The Tehran University Geophysics Centre reports that the earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres.
Rescue workers have been dispatched to the area and an estimate of the damages is underway.
Some reports indicate that more that 260 people were injured in the incident and anywhere from 8,000 to 10,000 homes have suffered serious damage, leaving many people homeless.
Four aftershocks with a magnitude of 4 on the Richter scale have also hit the area.
