Iran asks UN for help with increasingly arid climate

water woes

The head of Iran’s Department of the Environment says forecasts indicate that dry weather and a lack of precipitation in Iran will increase elevenfold by 2050.

IRNA reports that Massoumeh Ebtekar urged the Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific at the United Nations Environment Program to assist Iran in devising a mechanism to address the environmental problems facing the country.

All across Iran there has been a significant reduction in precipitation, which is already causing water shortages in several provinces.

Ebtekar expressed optimism that by enlisting the cooperation of the United Nations, his department can better address the problems caused by the drying climate all across the country.

The administration has set aside large budgets to replenish the country’s drying lakes such as Urmia and Hamoon.
