UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called for an easing of tensions over Iran’s nuclear program.

According to Reuters, the UN Secretary General urged all sides in the dispute to “tone down their rhetoric” and especially called on Iran to refrain from fulfilling its threats to block the Strait of Hormuz.

Some Iranian officials have spoken about blocking the strait’s vital international oil traffic if Iranian oil became the target of an international embargo.

Ban Ki-moon insisted that “there is no alternative to a peaceful resolution” of the international dispute over Iran’s nuclear program.

He urged Iran to fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency and to resume talks with the G5+1 to resolve the international concerns.

Iran insists that its nuclear activities are peaceful, but the latest IAEA report said it may have a military dimension.

Iran has indicated it is willing to return to the negotiation table, but no dates have been confirmed.
