The head of Iran’s Literacy Movement has announced that more than 9.5 million Iranians over the age of six are illiterate.

Ali Bagherzadeh told the Reporters Club today, Monday November 26, that one third of the illiterate population is between the ages of 10 and 49.

Bagherzadeh said there are no administrative obstacles to rooting out illiteracy but neither has the administration shown any serious interest in literacy activities.

Begherzadeh said a lack of motivation among illiterate people to learn the necessary skills is the main obstacle facing existing programs.

The Tabnak website reported last March that 11 million Iranian adults have low literacy and over 15 percent of the population over the age of six is illiterate.

After the Iranian Revolution of 1979, the National Literacy Movement was founded with the aim of uprooting illiteracy; however, after 34 years, the problem still persists.
