Protesters demanded the release of Nasrin Sotoudeh, a 45-year-old human rights activist and lawyer who has been for more than two years in an Iranian prison, this afternoon at the Iranian embassy in Brussels.

“She is a symbol for all the political prisoners of conscience who are imprisoned by the Iranian regime,” said Helmut Gabel, of the International Organization to Preserve Human Rights in Iran.

Nasrin Sotoudeh was sentenced to six years in prison because of her political activism and got a ten years ban to practise her profession as a laywer. “In addition, her family is also persecuted by the Iranian regime,” says Helmut Gabel. “They imposed a travel ban on her 12 year old daughter. The ban was only lifted after a hunger strike of 49 days that Nasrin Sotoudeh held. Like her, there are many who, for political, religious or other reasons are imprisoned. We want to keep alive the attention for them and continue to exert pressure on the Iranian regime to release them. “

After their manifestation in front of the Iranian embassy, the protesters went to the Brussels Midi railway station for a short flashmob. From now on, they plan to do every month a similar protest action in a different European capital with an Iranian embassy.
