One-year jail term for senior teacher activist Ali Akbar Baghani

 

 

 

 

 

 

A senior member of the Teacher’s Union has been sentenced to a year in prison a court in Tehran.

According the Human Rights Activist in Iran (HRAI) website, Ali Akbar Baghani, the union’s secretary general has been sentenced to a year in prison plus ten years of exile in Zabol by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court presided over by Judge Pirabbasi. The ruling is based on charges of “propaganda” against the regime.

Baghani also faces a five-year suspended sentence in connection with demonstrations in support of teachers’ rights more than five years ago. Should his latest sentence be upheld by the appeals court, he will have to spend a total of six years behind bars followed by ten years of exile for his activism.
