Zahra Mostafavi, the daughter of the late founder of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Khomeini, has written a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader, urging him to reconsider the Guardian Council’s disqualification of Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani from the race for president.

ISNA reports that Zahra Mostafavi’s letter to Ayatollah Khamenei mentions that on the day his name was selected as the late leader’s successor, the second name mentioned by Ayatollah Khomeini was that of Hashemi Rafsanjani.

She expresses concern that the Guardian Council has dropped Hashemi Rafsanjani from the list of approved candidates, saying: “This can only result in divisions between the two close companions of the Imam and public apathy toward the election.”

She stresses that it may be true that Hashemi Rafsanjani has changed to a degree over the years but she stresses that the gradual separation of the top two Islamic Republic figures is the “greatest blow to the Revolution and the regime.”

Hashemi Rafsanjani has announced already that he will not challenge the Guardian Council’s decision.
