The official files of the three Iranian opposition leaders under house arrest have been forwarded to the Supreme Council of National Security by order of the Supreme Leader, reports the son of one of those leaders.

On Tuesday September 10, Mohammad Taghi Karroubi used his Facebook account to break the news about his father, Mehdi Karroubi, and MirHosein Mousavi and Zahra Rhanavard.

His Facebook posting reads: “A few weeks ago there was talk in political circles of Mr. Hashemi Rafsanjani meeting with the leader, and the proposal to end the house arrest and illegal incarceration of the leaders of the Green Movement was presented by the chairman of the Expediency Council.”

The posting says Ayatollah Khamenei then agreed to forward the files to the Supreme Council of National Security for review by its new chief, Ali Shamkhani. He was appointed to the position by President Hassan Rohani, a choice lauded by Mehdi Karroubi’s son, who has referred to Smakhani as a “competent and powerful individual in line with the people.”

Mehdi Karroubi, MirHosein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard have been under house arrest since February of 2011 for challenging the 2009 election outcome and for rallying people to demonstrate on February 14 in support of the Arab uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia.

There has been much speculation that the election of Hassan Rohani in June of this year could result in the eventual release of these opposition leaders and a more open atmosphere in Iranian politics.
