Foreign minister criticized for comments on assault

The Keyhan daily and conservative MP Hamid Resai have denounced the foreign minister’s statements posted on his personal Facebook page condemning the assault on the daughters of MirHosein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard, the opposition leaders under house arrest.

Hamid Rezai said in Parliament: “Why should the foreign minister support the words of daughters of the heads of sedition when the Intelligence Ministry has issued a statement saying that it was the daughters who committed the inappropriate behaviour?”

While the Mousavi daughters have alleged that Intelligence Ministry officials assaulted them during their visit with their detained parents, the ministry claims the women turned around the facts and it was in fact Nargess and Zahra Mousavi who assaulted the official.

Mohammad Javad Zarif had reacted to the events, saying the matter was out of his jurisdiction, but he expressed support for the Mousavi sisters. Furthermore, many reformist and progressive figures of the Islamic Republic have criticized President Hassan Rohani for not reacting to this event.

The Keyhan Daily, an ultra-conservative paper, also accused the Foreign Ministry of becoming a puppet in the hands of “leaders of sedition.” The conservatives of the Islamic Republic establishment refer to the opposition leaders under house arrest as leaders of sedition because they challenged the 2009 president election outcome and triggered widespread street protests.
