Ahmad Montazeri summoned after defending opposition leaders

Ahmad Montazeri, whose late father Ayatollah Montazeri was a chief critic of the Islamic Republic regime, has been summoned by the Special Court for the Clergy.

The Kaleme opposition website reports that Ahmad Montazeri appeared in court on Saturday, but so far nothing has been confirmed about the charges against him.

Last week, Ahmad Montazeri gave an interview in which he spoke critically about the continued house arrest of opposition leaders Mehdi Karroubi, MirHosein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard and called for their immediate release.

“This is a dark stain on the forehead of the regime that it has convicted and condemned these three individuals without a trial… not even in absentia,” Montazeri was quoted as saying. “Resolving this as soon as possible would be in the interest of the regime.”

Karroubi, Mousavi and Rahnavard have been under house arrest since February of 2011 for challenging the legitimacy of the 2009 presidential election.
