A group of Iranian students at Amir Kabir University in Tehran staged a demonstration yesterday to protest “the incompetence and negligence of university personnel,” which they claim has caused the death of a female student.

Student media report that Amaneh Zanganeh, a graduate student living in the university residence, died from asphyxiation after breathing gases emanating from plumbing liquids in the dormitory showers.

The students maintain that the dorm residents were not well informed about the presence of corrosive fumes in the sewage pipes and the use of hazardous plumbing liquids by dorm staff.

They further blame the administrators for failing to give Zanganeh a permanent room at the dorm. They report that she was sleeping at the prayers hall that night, and that’s why she used the basement showers and was exposed to the deadly fumes.

Daneshjoo News reports that hundreds of students gathered on campus at noon yesterday, holding pictures of Zanganeh and chanting slogans critical of the administration and university officials.

Some students reportedly boycotted classes, while some professors joined in the protest and some university union members met with the university president to relay the protesters’ demands.

Protesters were told that the administration will form a committee to follow up on the students’ demands, which brought the demonstration to a peaceful end.
