Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today said he was saddened by the loss of life and destruction caused by a powerful earthquake that hit Iran’s Bushehr province.
In a statement, Mr. Ban’s spokesperson said Mr. Ban “extends his sincere condolences to the Iranian Government and people, particularly the families of those who have died.”
According to media reports, the 6.3 magnitude quake killed at least 37 people and injured 850. It also destroyed some 700 homes and devastated two small villages.
Mr. Ban also expressed his deepest sympathy to those affected by the disaster, and reiterated the UN’s readiness to provide assistance and mobilize international support that may be needed.
