Iran’s president-elect Hassan Rohani says the majority of Iranians voted for “moderation, reason, collective wisdom, moving along expert paths and refraining from extremism and arbitrariness”, and the future administration will work within this framework.

ISNA reported on Saturday June 29 that Hassan Rohani stressed that all must surrender to this vote, adding: “The future government must avoid extremism, and this is a message for all.”

He went on to add that the people’s message in the elections was one of “peace and reconciliation, the rejection of violence and an emphasis on the rule of law and transparency.”

Rohani described the election as a vote that re-established the legitimacy of the regime and the people’s will for “true religious democracy.”

Referring to street celebrations that followed the election and the national football team’s victory, Rohani stressed that security forces must remain flexible and respect people’s dignity.

In terms of foreign policy, Rohani added that moderation in foreign relations does not mean “surrender and weakness” but rather “effective and constructive interaction.”

Rohani went on to say that his administration is in the process of taking over from the administration of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, adding that his cabinet will be a “non-partisan cabinet” chosen only on the basis of expertise in the particular areas of governance.
