The Zanjan Lead and Zinc Factory has laid off 240 workers following the closure of the production facility on the outskirts of the city.
ILNA reports that employment ministry officials in Zanjan say the 240 workers have been put on the unemployment benefits list.
The officials add that while the factory will have to be reopened in the near future, workers need support during the transition period.
The factory was closed following Zanjan residents’ persistent protests against the level of pollution caused by factory emissions. Management has promised to transfer the factory to a different location, which so far has not materialized.
